Nesting Characteristics

This command allows to specify the nesting properties (section, thickness, security area...) of a part or support. This command is available in Part, Assembly and Unfolding documents.

Creation stages / Use:

Click the icon or select the Tools > Nesting Characteristics Management > Nesting characteristics... command from the drop-down menu.

  1. Choose if you wish to define the characteristics of a part to nest or the characteristics of a support that will contains parts to nest.

  2. Select the projection frame or plane of the geometry to nest. The Z direction is indicated by an orange arrow. To reverse the positioning, the frame has to be reversed.

  3. Select the definition mode of section to nest:

  4. Validate .

Available options:

  • Nest the enclosing box

This option allows to use the enclosing box instead of the part itself.

  • Nest into holes ( only available in part)

This command allows to place into the internal contours of the parts.

It is applied to all internal contours of the part. If the part has many small cut-outs, it can negatively involve the nesting result. In this case of a part with a big cut-out (to consider) and small cut-outs (to ignore), the good way is to choose the manual mode for the section to nest and choose a sketch with only the big cut-out.

This option has no sense in the case of nesting by the enclosing box. Cut-outs aren't considered.

  • Allow flip

This option allows to flip the part on the support in order to gain in loss rate.

In order that a flip part is properly placed inside the support, TopSolid must knows its thickness. For a sheet metal part this value is retrieved automatically, otherwise it must be entered in the field below.

Into the nesting document, part quantity is global (flipped part or not).

  • Thickness

This option allows to set manually the thickness.

  • Security area ( only available in part)

  • Offset

Offset of security can be entered. It is uniformly distributed around the contour of the part.

  • Section

This option allows to define the section of security around the part : with faces sections or profile.

Freedom degrees:

  • Free

This option allows to let the nesting manage the nested part rotation from 0° to 360° with a step of 1°.

  • Interval

This option allows to enter a minimum angle, a maximum angle as well as the rotation step. During the nesting, the part will be able to be rotated following the entered step. If the minimum angle is 0°, the maximum one is 360° and the step is 90°, the part can be rotated to 0°, 90°, 180°, 270° or 360°.

  • Angles

This option allows to enter authorized angles to use.
